Connected Papers fills a specific niche in academic research: making citation networks visual and interactive. Instead of scrolling through endless search results, you drop in one paper and get a graph that shows how papers cluster by similarity. The Semantic Scholar backbone means coverage is broad across sciences and humanities, though it's not exhaustive for every niche subfield.

The tool is straightforward to use. You paste a DOI, title, or URL, and the graph appears in seconds. You can click any node to see its details and build out the graph further. The Prior Works and Derivative Works views add historical depth and forward-looking context, which is helpful for understanding how a field has evolved and where it's heading. The free tier is generous enough for occasional use, but if you're working on a large literature review, the Pro plan's unlimited graphs become necessary.

Missing features include direct integration with reference managers like Zotero or EndNote, and the export options are basic. But for what it does — visually mapping academic papers — it's a clean, fast, and useful tool. It won't replace a deep literature search, but it's excellent for getting oriented in a new area or catching papers you might have missed.
