O que é um Pika?
O pika é um pequeno mamífero herbívoro pertencente à família Ochotonidae. Essas criaturas muitas vezes são confundidas com roedores, mas estão mais relacionadas a coelhos e lebres. Os pikas geralmente são encontrados em áreas rochosas de montanhas na América do Norte e partes da Ásia, especialmente em ambientes alpinos e subalpinos.
Pikas are characterized by their short limbs, rounded ears, and lack of a visible tail. They have thick fur that helps them survive in cold climates, and their size varies from about 15 to 30 centimeters in length. One of the most notable aspects of pikas is their high-pitched calls, which they use for communication, particularly during mating seasons and to warn others of potential predators.
Estes animals are also known for their behavior of collecting and storing food. Pikas gather a variety of plant materials, such as grasses and herbs, and create ‘haypiles’ to sustain themselves through harsh winters when food is scarce. This behavior is crucial for their survival, as they do not hibernate and must rely on their stored food to survive the cold months.
