Variável Nominal

Uma variável nominal é um tipo de variável categórica usada para rotular categorias distintas sem implicar qualquer ordem.

A variável nominal is a category of variable in statistics and research that represents different categories or groups without any intrinsic ordering or ranking among them. This type of variable is often used in pesquisa qualitativa to classify data into distinct categories. Examples of nominal variables include gender (male, female), hair color (blonde, brown, black), or types of pets (dogs, cats, birds). Each category is mutually exclusive, meaning that an observation can belong to one category only.

Nominal variables are usually analyzed using frequency counts to determine how many observations fall into each category. They can be represented visually using bar charts or pie charts, where each slice or bar represents a different category and its proportion in relation to the whole dataset.

In análise estatística, nominal variables are often coded numerically for computational purposes; however, the values assigned do not have any mathematical significance. For example, if ‘1’ represents ‘male’ and ‘2’ represents ‘female’, these numbers are simply labels and do not imply that ‘male’ is greater or lesser than ‘female’.

Compreender variáveis nominais é crucial para coleta de dados and interpretation, especially in fields such as social sciences, market research, and health studies, where categorization of qualitative data plays a vital role in analysis and reporting.
