Was ist ein Pika?
Das Pika ist ein kleines, herbivores Säugetier aus der Familie Ochotonidae. Diese Kreaturen werden oft mit Nagetieren verwechselt, sind aber enger mit Kaninchen und Hasen verwandt. Pikas sind typischerweise in felsigen Bergregionen Nordamerikas und Teilen Asiens zu finden, insbesondere in alpinen und subalpinen Umgebungen.
Pikas are characterized by their short limbs, rounded ears, and lack of a visible tail. They have thick fur that helps them survive in cold climates, and their size varies from about 15 to 30 centimeters in length. One of the most notable aspects of pikas is their high-pitched calls, which they use for communication, particularly during mating seasons and to warn others of potential predators.
Diese animals are also known for their behavior of collecting and storing food. Pikas gather a variety of plant materials, such as grasses and herbs, and create ‘haypiles’ to sustain themselves through harsh winters when food is scarce. This behavior is crucial for their survival, as they do not hibernate and must rely on their stored food to survive the cold months.
Aufgrund Klimawandel and habitat loss, some pika populations are facing threats. As temperatures rise, their natural habitats are being altered, pushing them to higher elevations where suitable living conditions are becoming increasingly limited.
